I have finally made it to the Murakami show at MOCA! And I am very glad that we made an effort to see it during the last weekend of the show. When I saw photos of the show, I was just thinking that it would be nice to see the show; if I missed it, then I miss it. But when I actually stepped into the museum, I was happy.
The environment of the museum was very warehouse like, with minimum color and open ceiling; all art works really became the focus of the space. I could feel the energy and joy from vibrant colors of paintings and sculptures.
All the artworks were just fascinating. It might not have been the best show for many, but it was one of the best show for me. Everyone in the museum were happy, smiling, excited, yet calm and satisfied.
Since it was the last weekend of the show, a lot of people showed up, and it felt like there were more people than the museum staff expected. There was a long line at the entrance, a long line outside the video showing, and a long line outside the small boutique that sells Murakami related goods.
There was however no line outside the Louis Vuitton boutique though…. maybe it’s because everything was pretty much SOLD OUT! Can you see how lonely those shelves look, compared to other photos on the internet that were taken during the opening night of the show?
The small boutique was a crazy process. Most of merchandises were sold out by that point, and you would be lucky with whatever you could get. I wanted to get a Kiki and Kaikai stuffed animal; when I looked into the clear acrylic bin, only Kaikai were left, along with some DOB on the side. I thought to myself, that’s ok, it would be nice to have both, but I prefer Kaikai anyways. And Terence took a peek into the bin with DOB; he pulled out a Kaikai from the bottom of the bin! He turned around and said, “lucky!” Soon after that, I was in line at the cashier and tried to get out of there ASAP, because there were already 2 girls gotten upset over the Kaikai in my hands, because they couldn’t find it anywhere!
